To take input of the different sensory systems into account (cross-modal interactions) is not only beneficial because each modality provides information about different aspects of the world but also because the different senses can jointly encode particular aspects of events (e.g. the location of meaning of an event). However, grains of cross-modal integration have a cost: each modality uses very specific representations which need to be transferred in supramodal representation that allows the different senses to communicate.
CINACS teaches and investigates the principles of cross-modal interactions in natural systems and opportunities to implement those in artificial systems.
