Prof. Dr. Joseph A.allan,
Critiques, after-action reviews, after-event reviews, huddles, hot-washes, post-mortems…DEBRIEFS: Teams Learning from Doing in Context
Debriefs are a type of work meeting in which teams discuss, interpret, and learn from recent events during which they collaborated. Since their initial use in the early 1900s, debriefs have been introduced in the medical field, the fire service, aviation, education and in a variety of organizational training and simulation environments. Essentially, debriefs are a tool for learning from misses, near misses, and everyday work experiences. Building upon recent research, I will share a couple salient examples of how these meetings effectively improve safety climate thereby reducing occupational injury as well as how they can be used as a tool to reduce an undesirable workplace event, the in-patient fall. I will conclude with a discussion of the implications of debriefing behavior in lower risk occupational environments.
