Doctorate procedure
This is how the doctorate procedure proceeds:
Supervision
The first and most important requirement in order to do a doctorate at the Institute of Psychology is a supervisory commitment of a full-time professor working at the Institute of Psychology. In all other cases, please contact us at promotion.psychologie@uni-hamburg.de
Enrollment
At the Institute of Psychology, enrollment is also possible if you have not been admitted to doctorate, yet. For this, you solely need the supervisory commitment of a full-time professor at the Institute of Psychology. You can confirm the requirement for enrollment at the doctoral studies office. Afterwards, you can enroll via Campus Center.
Admission to Doctorate
The admission for a doctorate is issued by the examinations board for doctoral studies. It meets at least twice a year, regularly four times a year. To request the admission for doctorate, you have to hand in the following documents timely. Please submit them in writing to Prof. Dr. Brigitte Röder, attn. Sabine Märkert, Von-Melle-Park 5, 20146 Hamburg and vie e-mail by PDF to promotion.psychologie@uni-hamburg.de.
- Informal application for admission of your doctoral project, addressed to the chairwoman of the examinations board for doctoral studies ( Prof. Dr. Brigitte Röder).
- Personal data sheet with a particular focus on scientific education in accordance with § 5 (4) a.
- Certificates of passed university and state exams as a certified copy.
- Workplan/exposé including the signatures of both dissertation supervisors.((please note the guidelines) PDF
- Declaration in accordance with § 5 (4) c, if you aim for a doctorate with the title Dr. phil. or with the title Dr. rer. nat.
- One-page declaration that explains why the planned dissertation meets the aimed doctoral degree ( Dr. phil or Dr. rer. nat.).
- Declaration in accordance with § 5 (4) d, if and with what success you already applied elsewhere for a doctorate.
- Declaration in accordance with § 5 (4) e, confirmation of an eligible examiner (see doctoral degree regulations § 10 (2), as a general rule a full-time professor at the Institute of Psychology) that he/she agrees to supervise the doctoral dissertation.
- Proposal for the composition of your doctoral degree examinations board in accordance with doctoral degree regulations § 10 (2).
- An uncertified copy of your identity card (both sides).
- Please check if a votum of the ethics committee is necessary.
Doctoral studies
As provided in the academic regulations of doctoral studies of December 2005, doctoral studies comprise four semesters with six credit hours per week. Two credit hours per week must be fulfilled by attendance to a research seminar at the Institute of Psychology. Furthermore, two credit hours per week have to be passed in another form of course (it is recommended to conduct a course (teaching)).
Please hand in the certification of completed doctoral studies (signed by your first supervisor) as well as course completion certificates or proof of accomplished teaching to the academic office psychology before submitting your dissertation copies.

Submission of dissertation
Please hand in six copies of your dissertation to the academic office. You are also allowed to send them via registered post with personal delivery to Studien- und Prüfungsbüro Psychologie, attn. Sabine Märkert, Von-Melle-Park 5, 20146 Hamburg.
On the last page of each submitted dissertation copy there have to be these both certifications (signed by hand):
