Frequently Asked Questions
Course Registration in STiNE
In order to properly register for courses, please consult our handout (Handout zur Anmeldung in STiNE) and keep in mind the registration deadlines before the beginning of the semester.
If you missed the regular registration deadline, please register during the correction phase (Ummelde- und Korrekturphase) at the beginning of the semester.
Hardship Provision
The hardship provision at the Institute of Psychology applies to students who are caring for children, part-time students, and students with disabilities and chronic illnesses. Before the start of each semester, you can request early course registration for the sake of planning security. Please use the form provided in the Downloads section and be mindful of registration deadlines. For further information please consult our guideline document: "Härtefälle".
Students with diabilities and chronic illnesses can contact Ms Gattermann-Kasper, who will provide an assessment for the Academic Office detailing the ways in which we can support you in your studies.
Measures to compensate for disadvantages during exams recommended by Ms Frau Gattermann-Kasper have to be communicated to the Academic Office at the latest six weeks prior to the exam to allow for their planning and execution.

No Seminar After Registration
Students who prioritized few or only very sought-after seminars during course registration via STiNE are less likely to receive a spot. Those who are without a seminar after the end of registration have to find seminars that are not yet at capacity or find someone to swap with them if they have received a spot in a seminar they cannot attend. In order to avoid difficulties in the future, we therefore recommend to set priorities for all seminars during the next course registration in STiNE.
Changing Courses after the STiNE Correction Phase
If you still have collisions in your course schedule after the end of the correction phase in STiNE (Ummelde- und Korrekturphase), please inform the Academic Office for which course you still need to register using the form "Seminarwechsel (nach Ummeldephase)". Please list as many alternative seminars as possible. If you have someone to swap seminars with, please include it in the form (Tauschpartner). This will increase your chances for registration in the desired seminar.
Please leave the form in one of the Academic Office's letterboxes in Von-Melle-Park 5, 4th floor, stairwell B.
Course Registration After Succession Process
1. Course registration via STiNE is still possible during the correction period. Most students who are admitted through the succession process receive their STiNE login before the correction period is over.
The course catalog is available online and on the notice board next to room 4094 in Von-Melle-Park 5, 4th floor, stairwell B. You can register for courses according to the respective degree course scheme (MSc, BSc).
You can paticipate in lectures (Vorlesungen, Hauptseminare) without registration in STiNE. Please be prepared to show your letter of admission. Participation in seminars is not possible without registration as the capacity is always limited.
2. After the end of the correction period, you can apply for registration using the form "Seminarwahl Nachrücker" for MSc and BSc. Include your student ID number and leave the form in the letterbox in front of room 4097 in Von-Melle-Park 5, 4th floor, stairwell B. The application cannot be processed without a student ID number.
3. Once you have received your student ID number, please inform the Academic Office via the online contact form and refer to your previous application.
4. Please note: Registration for a class is also a binding registration for the first exam date. If you want to de-register from an exam, mind the deadlines. You can find the exam dates here.
Compulsory Attendance
According to examination and subject regulations (Prüfungsordnung, Fachspezifische Bestimmungen), attendance in seminars and practical courses is compulsory. If you have to miss a session, notify the respective lecturer immediately.
Please note that if you miss more than 15% of a class, you will be regarded as "inactive". (15% of a weekly class account for two sessions.) "Inactive" students do not fulfill the exmination requirements, which might result in a prolongation of their studies.
The lecturer can allow the student to do additional work to compensate for sessions missed if they are not responsible for their absence (e.g. sickness, loss of a family member). This decision always depends on the individual situation and whether the reason for the student's absence is believable. The additional work should allow the lecturer to assess whether the student has studied the content of the sessions missed. The scope of the additional work is at the lecturer's discretion and can serve as compensation for all sessions missed.
There is no possibility of compensating for sessions that were missed because of reasons within the student's control (e.g. work outside of university course) or when the missed content cannot be acquired through independent study/additional work.
Master's students who know in advance that they are going to miss seminar sessions because of an internship are asked to inform their lecturer in a timely manner and arrange for compensatory assignments if appropriate.
Exam De-Registration
Generally, registration for a class also counts as a binding registration for the first exam date. Students who started their studies in or after winter 2014 have the option to de-register on their own until three weeks prior to the exam. Once you have de-registered, you cannot re-register after the deadline (one or three weeks prior to the exam) has passed. You will have to personally re-register for the next exam date.
Please note: You will also have to re-register for the next exam date if you did not pass or missed the first attempt.
The registration deadlines in STiNE are given as a date and time (ex. 17.04.2017, 00:00).
00:00 refers to the beginning of the day until which de- or re-registration is possible. This means that you can de- or re-register until midnight on the previous day (in our example: 16 April 2017).
Missing Credits (training in psychotherapy)
If you are planning to train in psychotherapy after your master's and have not received your undergraduate degree from Universität Hamburg, please be aware that you cannot make up for missing credits in clinical psychology within the master's program at Universität Hamburg.
Registering for a Different Exam Date
Registration for a class is also a binding registration for the first exam date.
If you de-registered, did not pass, or missed the first exam attempt, you will have to personally re-register in STiNE for the next exam date. The deadlines for re-registration are as follows:
- until one week before the second exam date in the same semester
- until three weeks before the next exam date in the following year
Students who started their studies in or after winter 2014 have the option to de-register on their own until three weeks prior to the exam.
The registration deadlines in STiNE are given as a date and time (ex. 17.04.2017, 00:00).
00:00 refers to the beginning of the day until which de- or re-registration is possible. This means that you can de- or re-register until midnight on the previous day (in our example: 16 April 2017).
Your exams are listed in STiNE under the semester in which you registered for the relevant module.
Exam Participation Without (Re-)Registration
If you participate in an exam without registration, your exam will generally not be counted. This applies to all students. Please check before each exam whether you are registered.
Sick Notice
Once you have registered for a module, you are generally obliged to particpate in the exam. If you fall ill, you have to provide a doctor's note (Krankmeldung, "gelber Schein") as soon as possible. If you do not hand in the doctor's note at the Academic Office within 10 days, the exam will be considered failed and you will have lost one of your examination attempts.
When you hand in your doctor's note at the Academic Office or via its letterbox, please include your student ID number and the dates and course/module numbers of the relevant exam(s).
After a maximum of three attestations of your inability to take the same exam, you will have to provide a detailed medical report (qualifiziertes ärztliches Attest). A simple doctor's note will not suffice at that point.
If you fall ill while you are writing your final thesis, you have to apply for an extension to your subject's examination board (see examination regulations/Prüfungsordnung) and hand it in to the Academic Office prior to your thesis deadline. If you are applying for an extension exceeding one week, the doctor's note needs to explicitly attest to your inability to take an exam.
Submission of Final Theses
Bachelor's and master's theses are to be handed in to the administration by the due date, thrice printed and once digitally on an appropriate electronic storage medium. The printed version must correspond to the digital version. In case of postal delivery, the date of the postal stamp is considered as the date of submission.
Final theses can be handed in personally with Mr Bartens (VMP 5, room 4058). If the due date coincides with a holiday, the thesis may be handed in on the following work day.
Registration for the Final Module and Thesis
Please also read: Vorgehen bei der Anmeldung zum Abschlussmodul.
BSc Final Module
The BSc final module consists of three parts:
1. final colloquium (to be taken in the same semester as the registration for the final module)
2. research group meetings (in the context of the final colloquium)
3. bachelor's thesis
MSc Final Module (commencement of studies before winter 2014)
The MSc final module consists of three parts:
1. final colloquium (to be taken in the same semester as the registration for the final module)
2. thesis presentation (in the context of the final colloquium)
3. master's thesis
You cannot register for final colloquia via STiNE – they are listed for informational purposes only! You will decide which colloquium to take after consulting with your thesis advisor and then register for it with the subject group (Arbeitsbereich) offering it. Please note the course number of your chosen colloquium on the registration form.
The final thesis has to be registered at the latest by the last day of the semester in which you registered for the final module (30 September for a summer semester, 31 March for a winter semester). The date of registration generally also counts as the begin of the thesis writing period (BSc: 3 months, MSc: 5 months (commencement of studies before winter 2014) or 6 months (commencement of studies after winter 2014)).
Registration for the final thesis is only possible after a successful registration for the final module and the final colloquium. Students who would like to graduate by the end of the summer semester should register their final thesis by 15 February (MSc) or 15 April (BSc).
Final theses can be handed in personally with Mr Bartens (VMP 5, room 4058). If the due date coincides with a holiday, the thesis may be handed in on the following work day.
Registration forms can be handed in personally in VMP 5, room 4097 or left in the letterbox in between rooms 4092 and 4093.

Balancing Studies and Family Obligations
Balancing lectures, seminars, and study groups while also taking care of children or other family members is a considerable challenge. Universität Hamburg strives to facilitate gender equality and considers itself a family-friendly university. This includes making the compatibility of family and career part of university culture and taking the particular needs of caregivers into account.
For more information visit the website of the Family Office at Universiät Hamburg.

Degree Certificate
Once the grade of your final thesis is visible in STiNE, your degree certificate will be available after another two to three weeks. You will receive an email to notify you when you can collect it.
Recognition of (External) Achievements
Completed coursework in a psychological subject from a previous course of study can in some cases be recognized as equivalent. Please follow the instructions in this document and use this form.
Transcript of Records
For a pdf of your transcript or records (ToR), please send an email to to the Academic Office (Prüfungsverwaltung). After a few days, you will find the pdf "ToRStudiumGerWeb" in your STiNE account under >Studying >Documents.

The following sum of credit points (CP) is required for the continued receipt of the BAföG grant:
- after the 3rd subject semester: 41 CP
- after the 4th subject semester: 73 CP
- after the 5th subject semester: 97 CP
Electives for Psychology Students
There are several options for electives (Wahlbereich) offered at the Institute of Psychology, e.g. the lecture "Menschenbilder" or a 12-week internship (instead of 9 weeks), which results in an additional 3 CP.
There are also many institutions at Universität Hamburg offering electives, e.g. the Sprachenzentrum, RRZ, or even the UKE. Registration for these electives is often not available via STiNE and can be found via the printed course catalog, postings at the institutions, or online.
Since we are not the ones offering these courses, we cannot give any information concerning contents and registration processes; you will have to research them on your own.
You will receive credit points after successfully completing an elective course. Please fill out and hand in this form at the Academic Office to receive an entry in STiNE.
Electives for Non-Psychology Students
Students who do not study psychology in their major or minor can visit introductory lectures (colored pink in the degree course scheme). They will have to record their attendance by signing the attendance list and cannot participate in the exam. Students who can demonstrate their regular attendance earn 1 CP.
Test Subject Hours (STiNE record)
Please inform the Academic Office once you have completed your test subject hours by printing the page "My Schedule/Credits" from the SONA website and leaving it in the Academic Office's letterbox. Please note that the test subject hours can only be recorded in STiNE after you have registered for the EEP module (usually in the third undergraduate semester).
Cooperation between Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel and Universität Hamburg
Students at Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel have the opportunity to take courses at Universität Hamburg and vice versa. You have to cross-register as a cooperating student. Students from Kiel have to hand in a prioritized list of courses they wish to take at the Academic Office at the Institute of Psychology. Participation is only possible if the courses are not full after all local students have received a space.
Additional Support
No matter whether before, during, or towards the end of their studies – the Center for Academic Advising and the Psychological Counseling team at the Campus Center provide current and prospective students with advice, information, and guidance concerning their studies and application.
The services range from office hours to workshops to subject-specific group advising for prospective students. The Center for Academic Advising works together with schools to support them in their career counseling programs, e.g. by holding lectures.
Students experiencing personal hardship during or in connection to their studies have the opportunity to reveice psychological counseling.
