Abstract:
Colors can mathematically be represented in so-called color spaces. For most color spaces, there is at least one measure for determining the saturation of a color. However, it is hitherto unknown how well these saturation measures correspond to human perception of saturation. In this presentation, I will first give a brief introduction to the most basic concepts in color science and then report on a very simple experiment that we conducted in an attempt to fill this gap: We used 80 color images of natural scenes from the McGill database as stimuli. These images were presented on a color calibrated LCD monitor to 8 participants who had normal color vision. Participants were asked to pick the pixel in the image that appeared to be the most saturated. We compared the judgments of the participants to 6 different measures of saturation defined in the HSV, DKL, LAB, LUV, and CIE xyY color spaces. Although these measures operate on only one pixel of a complex natural scene, our data show that all of the measures correspond well to human perception of saturation. Differences between the measures were small but systematic, with slight advantages for the measures defined in LUV and DKL. Further research is required to determine whether these findings also apply to other stimuli than natural scenes.
