M.Sc. Psychology with specialisation in Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy
The Master of Science (M.Sc.) programme in Psychology with a focus on Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy is a consecutive programme that qualifies graduates to work in science and research as well as in scientifically based professional practice in the non-academic application contexts of clinical psychology and psychotherapy.
The curriculum provides the content of a Master's programme for licensure as a psychotherapist according to § 7 and § 9 PsychThG and Annex 2 of the PsychThApprO. The professional requirements are fulfilled and the course is recognised under professional law. Students are qualified to take the licensing examination according to § 10 PsychThG. The certificate of graduation contains a declaration to this effect.
Upon completion of the Master of Science in Psychology with a specialisation in Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy, students are eligible to pursue doctoral studies or further professional training (e.g. postgraduate training in psychotherapy). The programme fulfils the requirements for the licensing examination as a psychotherapist.
The standard period of study is four semesters, equivalent to 120 credit points. Courses are generally taught in German.

Important note: After successful enrolment (not at the time of application!), a proof of vaccination against measles and an extended certificate of good conduct with no relevant entries must be submitted. It is not possible to complete the course without these certificates.
Applicants must have a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology with a clinical profile and a sufficient knowledge of English (at least level B2).
If your first degree is not from a German-speaking university, you will need to provide evidence of sufficient German language skills for enrolment (not for application). Please visit the German language proficiency page to check which certificates are currently accepted as proof of German proficiency at the University of Hamburg.

Important note: If you would like to apply for admission to the state licensing examination after completing your master's program, please note that the comparability of your bachelor's degree must then also be determined by the responsible Hamburg authority (Landesprüfungsamt). The comparability check carried out by the University of Hamburg as part of your application does not replace the check or determination of comparability by the relevant authority!
