About the Institute
Somewhat more than 100 years ago, the first psychological institute of Hamburg was founded. It grew out of the experimental psychological laboratory that was established in 1911.
The renewal of the Hamburg higher education act (Hamburgisches Hochschulgesetz, HmbHG) in 2014 caused the foundation of the „Faculty of Psychology and Human Movement“. This faculty is one of eight autonomous faculties of the Universität Hamburg.
As part of a generational change since 2006, a conscious transition away from humanistic and social-scientific to a distinct scientific orientation took place. This change goes along with the general trend of the German psychology. The nowadays predominant scientific direction of psychology is reflected in the usage of large equipment and intensive cooperation with the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Sciences and the Faculty of Medicine.
Currently, the Institute of Psychology consists of twelve departments with autonomous professorships. Information about the Mission Statement of the Universität Hamburg.
