Why people overestimate the size of minorities (German)
Quote from the article: "In surveys, the proportion of minorities in the total population is regularly greatly overestimated, while the proportion of the majority is underestimated. Until now, this has often been attributed either to respondents perceiving minorities as a threat or to the number of social contacts, with more direct or indirect contacts (for example, through media reports) supposedly leading to a higher estimated proportion. A US research team contradicts these hypotheses in the journal "PNAS." According to them, the general psychological pattern of overestimating small proportions and underestimating large ones is primarily responsible for the frequently observed miscalculation."
