Research Internship
Who is a research internship for?
A research internship is aimed at students who are interested in research and would like to gain insights into a scientific career, such as a PhD. During the internship, students actively engage with a specific research field both theoretically and practically and have the opportunity to complete their thesis after the internship.
Important: A research internship is only possible as a compulsory internship(“Pflichtpraktikum”) as part of a degree program.
What tasks can a research internship include?
During a research internship, you will gain insights into various aspects of the research process in current projects at the lab. In addition to organizational tasks, a research internship can theoretically cover the entire research process, from the development of a research question to the preparation of a research report or manuscript. Due to time constraints, the focus is usually on specific process steps, which are worked on independently or under supervision. Typical activities include, for example, preparing experiments, supporting data collection, entering and processing data as well as theoretical work such as literature research on specific topics. Examples of current projects can be found on the department's website.
Conditions of the internship
Scope
We primarily support part-time internships, i.e. an internship lasting 15-20 hours per week alongside your studies. A full-time internship is also possible in special cases. We recommend internships of at least 2 months to gain a comprehensive insight into various aspects of research.
Compensation
Currently, the expense allowance is € 237.98 after a regular full-time employment of 39.00 hours per week (as of July 2024). For a part-time internship, there is a pro rata allowance (e.g. for 15 hours/week, the monthly allowance is €91.53).
Working hours
The working hours are flexible and can vary depending on the tasks. Working hours are agreed with the supervisor at the beginning of the internship.
Place of work
The internship generally takes place at the university. It may be necessary to work outside the university for specific activities (e.g., data collection in schools). Working from home is only planned to a limited extent.
