The Longitudinal Interplay of Personality and Social Relationships: Developmental Trends Across Diverse Life Contexts and Age Groups
Abstract:
Personality traits, while relatively stable, have been shown to change across the entire lifespan and are established as predictors of key life outcomes. At the same time there is a longstanding tradition in social and personality psychology indicating that the way people are (personality) is inseparably linked to who people are with (social relationships). This might be particularly accentuated in specific developmental contexts and periods. For example, in adolescence social relationships apart from family become increasingly important for the self and thus, a diverse set of developmental contexts such as school or leisure time activities gain significance for developmental processes. Furthermore, social relationships have an inherent complexity because they are characterized by at least two individuals and diverse intrapersonal and interpersonal processes which shape their interactions and developmental outcomes in differential ways. This presentation will focus on the development of personality and social relationships from adolescence through late adulthood and will elucidate the dynamic interplay between the two constructs from diverse angles. To do so, I will present a number of longitudinal studies across a diverse set of time scales to highlight facets, sources, and processes of development. The outlook will be focusing on challenges and future projects in this line of research.
