The independent Max Planck Research Group Communication before Language at Nijmegen was headed by Prof. Dr. Ulf Liszkowski.

The research of the group focused on:

• mental state understanding and comprehension of prelinguistic reference and common ground
• infant pointing across different cultures
• infants' expectations for joint action
• emergence of gestures and social-cognitive correlates
• infants' interactions in different cultural settings
