New Study Published in Nature Energy: How Policy Mixes Drive Electric Vehicle Adoption

We are excited to share a new publication in Nature Energy, titled "Economic and behavioural policy coupling has divergent effects on electric vehicle adoption at individual and system scales", by Anne Günther, Mart van der Kam and Ulf Hahnel (Uni Lüneburg) in collaboration with Amir Rasanan (Uni Basel) and Sebastian Gluth.
Accelerating the transition to low-carbon transportation requires effective policy design. While governments around the world frequently combine economic incentives (such as carbon pricing) with behavioral nudges (such as targeted information campaigns), how these policy mixes interact across individual decision-making and broader system-wide dynamics has remained complex.
This study examines the nuanced interactions between economic price signals and climate information on consumer purchasing decisions. The findings reveal that coupling policy mechanisms yields divergent effects depending on whether they are evaluated at the individual or system scale.
These insights highlight the critical importance of tailored policy design: aligned economic and behavioral tools can significantly boost electric vehicle adoption, whereas misaligned policies risk diminishing expected benefits at scale.
